Ariel is completely overwhelmed – she writhes, sobs, and cries from the anticipation and the strikes.
I bring a tall-burning candle close to her feet again and continue the bastinado.
I oil her soles once more, combine tickling with strikes, and finally she is trembling, exhausted, and ready to speak.
